It is based on a translation of the International Phonetic Alphabet into colour. Each phonetic symbol is given a unique colour. When translated into ColourPhonics each language takes on its own colour code. Variations on a language's unique code occur with varying degrees in the translation of dialects and accents. ColourPhonics offers harmony to all languages across the globe

Posting using HTML tags

Hello people.

It would seem that Macs are unable to use the compose function when creating blogs. This doesn't mean that you are unable to format your posts. It just means that you have to add the html tags manually. Which is easy so there's no need to worry!

A html command consists of two parts:

A tag to tell the browser when to start formatting a piece of text. eg.<b>

A tag to tell the browser when to stop formatting a piece of text. eg.</b>

If I was to apply the above example to a piece of text <b>like this</b> it would make it bold.

Here are some basic html commands you might need:

<b></b> makes text bold

<i></i> makes text italic

<center></center> centers your text

<font color = ?></font> makes text the chosen colour.
eg. <font color = blue>makes text blue.</font>

<a href = "URL"></a> creates a link
eg. <a href = "http://contemporaryissues06.blogspot.com/"> links here.</a>

That should be enough tags to start you off. type='text'>

The Breakdown

Hi there folks.

My name is Jem, and I'm part of the management team for Contemporary Issues In Design, Semester One, 2006. I'm joined by my compadres Woro, Rhys, and Emma. Our role and contribution to this project is essentially providing you some web design and support for the project which we are all undertaking.

The first of our forays is providing you all with a blog site, which can be found at http://contemporaryissues06.blogspot.com, which we encourage you to look at, explore, and more importantly, use.

Now, this sentiment is all very well and good, and for the benefit of your doubt, let me explain to you just what a blog is. A 'blog', according to the almighty Wikipedia..

"...is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. Like other media, blogs often focus on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news. Some blogs function as online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Since its appearance in 1995, blogging has emerged as a popular means of communication, affecting public opinion and mass media around the world."For our purposes in Contemporary Issues In Design, our blog will incorporate all these elements mentioned, in a community-driven environment. Before we start discussing these possibilities, I'll take you through a simple step-by-step guide of how to use the blog.
The Basics Of Posting

The site is hosted at http://www.blogspot.com. Log onto the Internet and type this URL in.

On the index page (the first thing you see when you type in the URL) you'll find a username and password box. The management team has setup a log-in and password for each of the tutorials, and each tutor has been provided with the appropriate usernames and passwords for the tutorials. Type those in, and you'll move to the Blogger Dashboard, which is where the blogging action can begin. There's a whole bunch of things you can do from here, but we're keeping it simple for now.

You'll see the Blog Name 'Contemporary Issues In Design 06' listed, which is the primary blog we have setup. Click on that one. You'll also see another blog listed, the name of which varies depending on what tutorial you're in, but, again, we'll discuss this a little later.

You'll now be faced with a screen and several tabs running across the top of the screen. As we're creating a new post, make sure you're on the 'Posting' tab, and then click on 'Create' underneath it.

I dear say most of you are familiar with this sort of interface. If you use a web-based mail client (such as Hotmail or Yahoo!) or any word processing programs, then you already know how to use it. By default, it comes up in 'Compose' mode, which is quite straightforward to use. If you're into your jargon, it's a WYSIWYG type of setup. If you're comfortable with creating the posts in HTML yourself, there's an 'Edit HTML' option. I'd recommend you stick with the default anyway, as it will make life easier in general.

Just type your post in the box, then click on the 'Publish Post' button.

You have now created a blog entry. Welcome to the 21st century.

Some Notations On Creating Posts

Let's not change the font or font size (the first two options), but the other options are all yours. Sort of.

There are bold and italic buttons. As with most word processing programs, highlight the text you'd like to bold or italicise, then click the button. As a rule of thumb, I only ever bold headings (such as The Basics Of Posting as seen above) and italicise words I would really, really, like to emphasise. Keep in mind that too much text formatting, such as underlines or the postmodern strike<strike>through</strike> can get a little tiresome, so I'd recommend not using them unless you absolutely feel the need to.

The next option is text colour. If you do feel the need to use it, highlight the text, pick a colour, and voila.

The next button is fairly important, and I encourage you to use it when you can. It's the 'Link' button, part of the essential bloodstream of the Internet. Again, highlight the word you'd like to use as a link, click on the button, then enter the URL (ensuring that the http:// part precedes the rest of the address). The convention I like to use with links is as such: type out the whole URL and then link it if it's an essential website, or, just choose a word to use as your link (such as the Yahoo!) if it's not essential. Make sure you get the URL right when you're typing it in, as there's nothing more frustrating than a broken link. The best way to make sure you have the correct URL is to copy it when you have the URL up in a window, then paste it into the dialog box that comes up when you click on the 'Link' button.

I'd leave the justification to the default ('left'), unless you're writing us a poem.

The next bunch of tools are also quite helpful. Use 'Numbered List' if you're creating a list with chronological importance (such as the instructions above); 'Bulleted List' if you're making out a list in point form (such as this list here); and 'Blockquote' if you're quoting a large bunch of text (do go ahead and practice those wicked citation skills of yours).

Use 'Check Spelling'. It's one button! It is, unfortunately, an American spell checker (eg. 'emphasize' versus 'emphasise', 'color' versus 'colour'), but you can make it 'Learn' words. For some odd reason, 'blog' is not part of its default dictionary.

If you'd like to upload an image, the next button will help you out. Click on 'Add Image', and a popup window will show itself. Ensure that if you have a pop-up blocker that it allows pop-ups from blogger.com. You can upload images from your computer, the web, as well as choose a layout (it's best to keep it on 'Center') and an image size. To keep some sort of consistency, we should all use 'Medium' for picture size, just to keep everything civil. Blogger prefers you use the web standard JPEG and GIF as the file format.

The last tool is 'Remove formatting from selection'. I'll leave that with you.

I like being thorough, and I appreciate your patience so far. Let's get to the nitty gritty of what we're doing here. I know there are a few questions running through your mind, so I'll do my best to anticipate and answer them.

What Can We Use This Blog For?

Anything you want. Post up any URLs which you've come across in your research and think people will benefit from. Tell us what your group is up to (or isn't up to). Say hello. Post up an inspiring photograph. A doodle from your lecture. Discuss the week's lecture. Ask a question you'd like to hear other people's opinions on. The main purpose of this blog is to communicate, something which the Internet is made for, but we rarely capitalise on it. Consider this as a doorway to exploiting the Internet as much as possible, and you're contributing to it. You most definitely get out of it, what you put in.

Why Are We Using Blogger.com?

It's accessible from the Internet (you don't need to download a client to your computer), excellent at handling group blogs, has a very straightforward posting interface (others require HTML knowledge), and allows for XML feeds with relative ease (we would like to integrate this blog into the final website).

Why A Blog And Not A Forum?

There's something more personal (and yet equally public) about a blog. In this instance, we have over 200 people that can contribute, and there tends to be a greater sense of structure and readability when you're reading a post, followed by comments. Also, as there are definable tutorial groups dealing with separate definable topics, it makes sense to group the people posting as representing their tutorial groups. That way, we have this endearing 'hive mind' thing going on. Even better, the blog is open for comment by 'The Outside World (TM) (C)', that is, people not necessarily in this lecture room who may feel they can contribute. We're welcome to that kind of thing.

What Now?

Post something. Start checking the site obsessively and comment on the posts that are up. Contribute any way you can.

That's about all you need to know from us, for now.

Keep checking this blog. Bookmark it in your browser. We'll (just as you will be doing, right?) keep you updated as to what we're up to. If you feel like emailing us, do so at wemanageyou@yahoo.com, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. There's nothing stopping you from getting in contact with us via a post either, especially if you feel that both the question and answer will benefit everyone else. Don't be alarmed if the site keeps changing in design, as we'll be trying to play with a few things.

A Few Parting Shots

That's right; each group does indeed have their own blogging space. We encourage you to use that if you need somewhere to communicate within your tutorial group (it's more efficient and sensical than email), but don't get it confused with this main blog. This main blog is quite essential to how we operate as a larger entity, so use it!

I've noticed a group or two have changed a few settings, in regards to their name and URL, in their account. In order to minimise confusion, it'd be good if you changed it back to the original name and URL.

You can comment anonymously. Anonymity is part of the Internet landscape, and we're not taking that away from you. You can most definitely login with your provided tutorial account or your personal Blogger account, if you want to personalise yourself.

Thanks for your time!

This post will alway de displayed in the 'Links' section, for further reference.

<img style="display:block;
